How many practice hours do you need in Utah?
In Utah, a learner driver must log 40 hours of supervised driving practice—including 10 at night—before applying for a license.
Utah learner permit requirements
- Minimum permit age: 15
- Supervised practice required: 40 hours total, 10 at night (what counts as night driving)
- Permit hold period: 6 months
- License eligibility age: 16
- How hours are certified: 40-hour driving log certified by a parent or guardian.
Utah requires 40 hours of supervised driving with at least 10 at night. Applicants under 19 must also complete an approved driver-education course.
When can you drive with a permit in Utah?
Utah has no separate curfew for learner permits, but its midnight-to-5 a.m. law covers every driver under 17. Permit holders under 17 can drive after midnight only if the adult beside them is a licensed driver 21 or older.
With a licensed parent or guardian, an instructor, or the adult who signed your application beside you.
Allowed. Under 17, the person beside you must be a licensed driver 21+.
Alone. Only family as passengers for the first 6 months.
Not after midnight unless a licensed driver 21+ is beside you, or for work, the trip home from a school activity, farm work, or an emergency.
Alone. Only family as passengers until 6 months after licensing.
Alone. The midnight rule ends at 17.
- The 40 hours can include behind-the-wheel time in driver education and up to 5 hours on a driving simulator.
- The family-only passenger rule has the same exceptions as the night rule except work and school: a licensed driver 21+ beside you, a farm or ranch assignment, or an emergency. Police can enforce it only after stopping you for something else.
- The Driver License Division's teen page lists the night rule for licensed 16- and 17-year-olds, but the statute (§ 41-8-2) and the state's handbook set the cutoff at 17. If you're 17, ask the DLD before relying on either.
In December, sunset in Utah comes around 5 p.m., so the 10 night hours fit in early-evening drives.
Checked against Utah Code § 41-8-2 and § 53-3-210.5, and the Utah Driver License Division in October 2026. Limits after the road test are under restrictions for new drivers.
Requirements change and have exceptions. Always confirm the current rules with the Utah Driver License Division before applying.
Utah's graduated licensing stages
Complete driver ed; drive with a licensed parent, guardian, instructor or the adult who signed your application beside you; log 40 hours (10 at night).
Issued after 6 months; family-only passengers for 6 months; no midnight–5 a.m. driving until 17.
Graduated restrictions are removed.
Driving restrictions for new Utah drivers
Drivers under 17, permit holders included, can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed driver 21+ is in the seat beside them, or they're driving to or from work, straight home after a school-sponsored activity with school-provided transportation, on a farm or ranch assignment, or in an emergency.
For the first 6 months of a license, or until 18 if that comes first, drivers may carry only immediate family unless a licensed driver 21+ is in the seat beside them, they're on a farm or ranch assignment, or it's an emergency.
Drivers under 18 may not use a handheld device while driving except to report an emergency.
