When can you drive with a permit in Kentucky?

Kentucky permit holders under 18 can't drive from midnight to 6 a.m., even with a supervisor, unless they have good cause such as an emergency or a school or work activity. From 6 a.m. to midnight, a licensed driver 21 or older must sit beside them. The same curfew stays on the intermediate license until 18.

Instruction permit, under 18
6 a.m.–midnight

With a licensed driver 21+ in the front passenger seat, and no more than one unrelated passenger under 20.

Midnight–6 a.m.

Not allowed, even with a supervisor, unless you have good cause, such as an emergency or a school or work activity.

Intermediate license, under 18
6 a.m.–midnight

Alone, with no more than one unrelated passenger under 20 unless a driver training instructor is along.

Midnight–6 a.m.

Same as the permit: only with good cause. The law lists no exception for riding with an adult.

  • Breaking the curfew or passenger limit, or a moving-violation conviction, adds at least 180 days before you can move to the next license stage.
  • You must be 16 and hold the permit for at least 180 days before the road test, and a parent or guardian certifies your 60 hours (10 at night).

Because practice has to end by midnight, plan the 10 night hours for evenings. In December, sunset is before 5:30 p.m. across Kentucky.

Checked against KRS 186.450 and 186.452 in October 2026. Limits after the road test are under restrictions for new drivers.

Requirements change and have exceptions. Always confirm the current rules with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet before applying.
