- Supervised practice required: 100 hours total, no night minimum set
- Permit hold period: 6 months

Oregon requires 100 hours of supervised driving — the highest in the country — or 50 hours if you complete an ODOT-approved driver-education course. Oregon does not set a separate night-hours minimum, but night practice is strongly recommended.
When can you drive with a permit in Oregon?
Oregon puts no time limit on an instruction permit. You can drive at any hour, as long as a licensed driver 21 or older sits beside you. The midnight–5 a.m. limit starts with the provisional license and lasts its first year.
With a licensed driver 21+ in the seat beside you.
Allowed, with that same supervisor beside you.
Alone. No passengers under 20 except family for the first 6 months, then up to three.
Only between home and work or a school event with no other ride, for your job, or with a licensed driver 25+.
Alone.
Alone. The night limit has ended.
- Practice hours count toward the 100 (or 50 with driver ed) only when the supervisor is 21+ and has held a license for at least three years.
- A licensed parent or stepparent, or a driver ed instructor, in the car lifts the passenger limits for 16- and 17-year-olds. The limits also end at 18.
Oregon sets no night-hours minimum, but practice at night anyway: the permit allows it at any hour, and in December sunset is before 4:45 p.m. across Oregon.
Checked against ORS 807.280 and 807.122 in October 2026. Limits after the road test are under restrictions for new drivers.
Requirements change and have exceptions. Always confirm the current rules with the Oregon DMV before applying.

Driving restrictions for new Oregon drivers
For the first year, provisional drivers under 18 can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless they're driving between home and work or a school event with no other transportation, driving for their job, or with a licensed driver 25+.
For the first 6 months, no passengers under 20 other than immediate family; for the next 6 months, no more than three. A licensed parent or stepparent, or a driver ed instructor, in the car lifts the limits.
Drivers under 18 may not use a mobile device at all while driving, including hands-free.

Oregon sets no hours for instruction permit holders. A teen with a permit may drive at any time of day or night, as long as a licensed driver at least 21 years old sits in the seat beside them. Does Oregon require night driving hours?+
Oregon does not set a specific night-hours minimum, but the midnight–5 a.m. restriction during the first provisional year makes night practice important beforehand.
